First Friday Event and 9-11 project

Make a post card for a local hero on September 4, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping,’” Fred Rogers wrote in the Mister Rogers Parenting Book.

September 11, 2001 is a day that no American will ever forget.  It is the day that almost 3,000 people lost their lives in terrorist attacks.  This September 11 the Lenawee Community Foundation and community volunteers will remember the victims, survivors, and unsung heroes who came together and saved our nation from an even worse tragedy.  It is a day where we saw our friends, neighbors, and relatives rise to the occasion of service, to be the helpers.  We lined up to donate blood, held vigils for those lost, worked to find survivors, and so much more.

As we remember this day 14 years later, we invite you to once again be the helper.  Come join the Lenawee YOUTH Council and VOLUNTEER Lenawee!, programs of the Lenawee Community Foundation, at Adrian First Fridays on September 4, from 5-8 p.m. at the Adrian District Library.  Make a post card for a local hero — a fire fighter, police officer, emergency dispatcher, EMS worker, or veteran.

Post cards for local public servants will be placed in a basket for delivery on 9-11-15 to our local heroes, with treats thanking them for their service.  Post cards for our veterans will be delivered on Make a Difference Day to the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor, along with items from their wish list for veterans in need.  In addition we are partnering with Housing Help of Lenawee to create a veteran’s pantry.  This pantry will be available for local veterans in need and contain items that cannot be purchased with SNAP benefits.

The Lenawee Community Foundation is pleased to have a generous grant from the Points of Light Foundation, and community partners from Kohls and the Adrian District Library.  With their support we will make a difference in the lives of our local heroes.

VOLUNTEER Lenawee! is our community’s volunteer center.  The center works with local nonprofit organizations to find volunteers to support the good works done in our community.  If you would like to get involved and be a helper, contact Jim or Paula today or by calling us at (517) 423-1729.
