Get Involved with the Lenawee YOUTH Council

Lenawee YOUTH Council has been a fantastic group for youth ranging from age 12 – 21 with an interest in giving back to their community.

Since 1997 Lenawee YOUTH Council (LYC) has provided great assets to its members.  The Lenawee Community Foundation initiated Lenawee YOUTH Council in 1997.  Lenawee YOUTH Council not only volunteers in the community,  but is a welcoming environment that enriches teens, prepares them for their future, shows them what their county has to offer, and helps them grow as a person.

Each year LYC takes part in numerous volunteer opportunities.  We sorted clothes at Salvation Army, volunteered at the information booth during Art-A-Licious, assisted with spring cleaning for Habitat for Humanity ReStore, packed weekend snack sacks, and participated in many more philanthropic activities.  Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community, put a smile on people’s faces, plant a good feeling in our hearts, and meet new people.  Teens make positive connections because of our strong community presence.

Lenawee YOUTH Council is a great way to try new things, create positive relationships, and plan for your future.  We host a camp each year that helps develop leadership skills, Lenawee Youth Leadership.  This three-day long camp is a great way to step out of your comfort zone, meet new people, and give you a teaser of the fantastic activities the LYC has to offer.  After attending the local leadership camp, LYC members are invited to attend a state leadership conference, typically held on a college campus.  In addition, teens and their parents have an opportunity to sign up for college tours.  We tour the three local colleges each year, as well as 3-5 other universities.

Through Lenawee YOUTH Council, I have noticed my personality (as well as fellow LYC members) has changed in a positive light.  Students who were once quite shy have blossomed into leaders, and those who were never a fan of sharing their ideas to a group have become more outgoing.  As a social group, we are inclusive to new members and open-minded and respectful of their views.  At each meeting we go around the room and do introductions so all of the members are comfortable with each other and get to know each other.  Icebreakers and fun little games help keep the positive spirit alive during meetings/conferences/camps.

If you have any questions about LYC please contact Paula Trentman at 423-1729 or email her today.  Don’t hesitate to take the first step toward helping your teen become actively involved in their community.  Lenawee YOUTH Council provides an opportunity for teens to strengthen their leadership skills, learn more about Lenawee County, and play an active role in their community.
