McNeil Family

The Legacy Society – McNeil Family

In 2010, Walter and Leota (“Tom”) McNeil provided college scholarships for Deerfield graduates, playground equipment for Deerfield children, and renovations for Deerfield classrooms.

Walter passed away in 1989 at age 72, and Leota, affectionately known as “Tom”, passed away two days before Christmas, 2009 at the age of 92.  They lived their 39 married years together in the same home in Deerfield, where they owned and worked at the Valentine-McNeil funeral home.

Although they didn’t have any children of their own, their home was always a welcoming place with “Tom” often sharing her homemade cookies and hosting tea parties with the neighborhood children.  Friends described them as down to earth people, who lived rather simple lives.

Walter and Leota shared their love for children through their ultimate gift – trusts that provided for scholarships and capital improvements to their local school.  They may no longer be with us in person, but their spirit of generosity and their love of children will be preserved for good for ever.
