Securing Tecumseh’s Future

Local giving.  Lasting value.

You live here.
Tecumseh is your home community.
No one cares about Tecumseh as much as you and other residents here.

You have an opportunity to help your neighbors today, and make Tecumseh’s future better.

The Tecumseh Area Fund in the Lenawee Community Foundation has been established to provide for Tecumseh’s future.  This endowment will last forever with the earnings utilized in Tecumseh in the areas of civic, cultural, health, educational, or social services.  And, we will count on local residents to recommend grants that will best serve Tecumseh.

Today and for the Future:

You can give back to your community today, through an annual gift, and in the future, through your will or estate plan.

Today, a gift to the Tecumseh Area Fund will build a stronger community and qualify for a federal tax deduction if you itemize.

The Future:

A lifetime or planned gift to the Tecumseh Area Fund will help to secure the future of your community and a federal tax deduction if you itemize.

If the Tecumseh Area Fund is one of your choices, the Lenawee Community Foundation can accept a variety of gifts, such as appreciated assets, real estate, a life insurance policy, an IRA, or retirement account.  Or, you may wish to consider a gift from which you can receive life income.  You can also make a bequest through a codicil to your will or an amendment to your trust.  (Sample language is provided.)  You will want to consult with your professional advisor to find the option that will work best for you.

Your Legacy:

Whatever you do, or fail to do, you are leaving your legacy for future generations.  Please make your legacy For good For ever

Ruth Anne Thompson passed away in 2006, but in 2009 her mother and she gave away $211,000.

In the 1970’s they enlisted the help of their attorney to create charitable remainder trusts.  The trusts had both short and long term tax advantages, protected their income during their lifetimes, and met their desire to help Tecumseh, their community.  In 2009 grants from the Ruth V. and  Ruth Anne Thompson Fund included:

  • Imagination Library – $11,000 to be used for books for children residing in the Tecumseh School District and $5,000 towards the Imagination Library endowment
  • Community Arts of Tecumseh – $10,000 to support fine arts programming
  • Lenawee Economic Development Corporation – $10,000 towards web site development
  • Tecumseh Center for the Arts – $80,000 for the performing arts
  • Constance A. Farver Women’s Health Center – $50,000 for the center at Herrick Medical Center
  • Tecumseh Service Club – $20,000 to assist families with food, rent or utility bills; and
  • City of Tecumseh – $25,000 for trails.

Volunteers from the Tecumseh area included Carlton Cook, Chuck Gross, Dave Hickman, Scott Hill and Bob Vogel.
“What’s exciting,” stated Dave Hickman, Chair of the Lenawee Community Foundation Board, “is that every community in Lenawee County can build their fund through planned gifts.  We also have area funds established for Addison, Adrian, Blissfield, Britton-Macon, Clinton, Deerfield, Hudson, Morenci, Onsted, and Sand Creek.  Gifts from estates of any size can add up to something big for the future of every community here.”
